EEE
On August 28th the Health Department released a health advisory warning of a markedly increased risk of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) compared to previous years in Vermont.
EEE is an arbovirus that is carried by mosquitos and can cause a range of symptoms from a mild febrile illness (in 95% of patients) to meningitis and/or encephalitis (infection of the brain) in 5% of patients. Those with brain infection have a 30% mortality rate, and half of the survivors have permanent neurological sequelae.
This is a serious disease for which we should take precautions. But, kids need to play outside for their mental wellness. Cover their skin and douse them with bug spray. After 6 pm, would be a good time to come inside, eat dinner, (do the dishes, make the lunches, pay the bills…), do homework, read a book, and go to bed (no screens – they’re the worst).
When to call us with concerns about EEE: If your child has a fever, and severe persistent headache and neck pain.
